You’re easing into your driveway or making a slow turn into a parking spot, and out of nowhere—your tires let out a sharp chirp. It’s not loud like a burnout or skid, but it’s enough to make you wonder if something’s wrong. The odd thing? It only happens during low-speed, tight turns.
While this might seem like a minor annoyance, that chirping sound could be your vehicle’s way of telling you something needs attention.
Tire Chirping at Low Speeds
Chirping tires usually result from friction—and, more specifically, how the tires are gripping (or struggling to grip) the pavement. When you make a tight turn at low speed, like when pulling into a driveway, your front wheels are turning at a sharper angle than usual. This can cause the tires to scrub against the pavement slightly, especially if they’re wider performance tires or on all-wheel drive vehicles that don’t allow for as much wheel slippage.
In many cases, this is a normal sound caused by the type of tire and surface you’re driving on. But when chirping becomes frequent or more noticeable, it can also be a symptom of underlying problems with alignment, suspension, or tire wear.
It’s Just Tire Behavior
If your vehicle has aggressive, low-profile tires, especially summer performance tires, some squeaking or chirping during sharp turns is normal. These tires have more grip and stiffer sidewalls, so they’re less forgiving when dragged sideways across a surface like asphalt or concrete.
Tire compound also matters. Softer compounds meant for better traction will occasionally squeal or chirp in parking lots or during tight turns—especially on hot days or when the pavement is smooth.
However, the sound should be subtle and shouldn’t come with any vibration, steering stiffness, or uneven handling. If it does, it’s time to look deeper.
Other Causes Behind the Chirping Sound
Tire chirping that becomes more frequent or louder often points to mechanical issues. Here are a few common causes:
Wheel Alignment Issues
When your wheels are misaligned, the tires don’t point in the exact direction they’re supposed to. That means during tight turns, one or more tires may be dragging slightly, creating that squealing or chirping noise. Misalignment can happen gradually from normal wear or suddenly after hitting a curb or pothole.
Worn Suspension Components
Your suspension controls how weight is distributed and how your tires contact the road. If components like bushings, control arms, or ball joints are worn, your wheels may not be sitting or moving correctly—leading to chirping noises during turns or uneven pavement contact.
Tire Wear Patterns
Unevenly worn tires—especially ones with cupping or feathering—can chirp during low-speed turns. This kind of wear often stems from neglected alignment or suspension issues, so it’s both a symptom and a cause that should be addressed.
Improper Tire Pressure
Overinflated tires are more likely to skid slightly during tight maneuvers. Underinflated tires can roll too much on their sidewalls, also causing unusual noise. Checking and maintaining proper tire pressure can sometimes eliminate low-speed tire noise altogether.
Is It Dangerous
On its own, occasional tire chirping during a sharp driveway turn isn’t a safety issue. But if it starts happening more frequently, is accompanied by steering problems, or you notice uneven wear on the tires, it’s worth having your alignment and suspension inspected.
Leaving these problems alone can lead to reduced tire life, poor handling, and even premature wear on steering components. The earlier you catch it, the easier—and cheaper—it usually is to fix.
